So, hopefully most people know where Cape Promthep is? Right on the southern tip of Phuket on the west side, touted by many guidebooks and website as a place to watch the sunset. We have many times in the past to sunset, for a great view, and I ended up climbing into the road to the end of the cape early this year - the first time I did that after living here for over 10 years! There is also a restaurant here.
I have not really paid attention before, but look online review that caught my eye. Looks like scenery and (important!) Review did note that the restaurant is not too expensive! So it was added to the "things to do on holiday" list. the restaurant has been there for years, I think for 10 years or more .. but again, nothing new for us in a long time!
Cape Phromthep has a large car park, from where you climb a few steps to a large open area with a great view, a temple, a lighthouse and a fire dancer at sunset! The entrance to the restaurant is the right of the stairs, or you can ride as we did, to the top to get some first glance, then followed the trail to the restaurant.
We went for lunch and there were only a few tables occupied. I think at sunset will be more crowded and we would go again sometime for what will be a great sunset dinner .. and we have our table staked out already!
In here tables that are too hot for lunch, but several tables were more calm, and we have a choice of almost all of them. We found a very shady place with enough room for 6 people to sit. Service is fast and friendly and we soon had a cold drink served while waiting for lunch.
I had a beer with lunch ... no surprise there! The bottle comes with a glass that looked more like a small flower vase .. I usually just drink straight from the bottle (oh, how rude!) But had to try the smallest pint I've ever used ...
We especially enjoyed sitting in the shade enjoying the scenery, the fresh air and sunshine (we got quite a lot of rain during the previous week). The lunch was very happy to be enjoyed by all. And the food is not expensive .. I like it. In places like Phromthep, there must be an option to rip people off for a small fortune to enjoy a meal with a view, but the price is OK (and OK by the standard cost by most people!) I ordered a salad catfish (Yam Pla Duk Foo) was good, maybe not the best ever but combined with shaded table, a view, a small glass of beer and the company of my family, great.
Success! After many years, we recognize that stipulated in our way .. we wanted to eat at a place that we know, somewhere we can be sure the food was good. Nice to try new restaurants and happy ... we sometimes try restaurants that can not be mentioned in the blog and quickly forgotten. Cape Phromthep restaurant will be reviewed and could definitely recommended. We will return to eat the sunset soon.
